Cadenhead’s Enigma

Cadenhead’s Enigma 1998 25 YO, 41.4%

Image (c) Whisky Base

A blended whisky from independent bottler Cadenhead’s. A 1998 vintage, bottled 2023. Matured in refill sherry butts and limited to 5850 bottles.

Nose: Starts off sweet and slightly oaky, with notes of vanilla and dried fruits. As it develops, the fruits become drier and more aromatic, complemented by pencil shavings and earthy vanilla. Further time reveals hints of leather, perfume, and a cigar box.

Taste: Light-bodied and somewhat watery initially. With additional sips, a mild spiciness emerges in the form of white pepper, alongside a fair bit of oakiness. Subtle notes of chocolate and coffee appear, with dried fruits lingering in the background.

Finish: Long but faint, maintaining the same profile yet becoming increasingly delicate. The watery character persists, lacking the body and structure needed for a lasting impression.

Comment: Shows flashes of old grandeur, but ultimately falls a little short.

Score 84/100
