Compass Box The Peat Monster
Compass Box The Peat Monster, NAS, 46 %
Here’s a blended malt from the mix masters at Compass Box. The Peat Monster has changed somewhat over time. In previous incarnations it was composed of malt whiskies from Islay only. The current version (which I see referred to as 4th edition) is primarily made up of Caol Ila, a fair bit of Laphroaig, and a tiny component of Highland malts. The official product page breaks it down like this:
64.7 % Caol Ila, refill hogshead
35,0 % Laphroaig, refill hogshead
1,0 % Highland malt blend, custom French oak cask - Heavy Toast
I know, it adds up to a little more than 100 %, but that’s the magic of blending, I guess :-)
The Compass Box The Peat Monster will be released in Norway on August 27 at NOK 850 (4484301). You can also buy it in the UK at around GBP 44.
Nose: I am immediately reminded of young Caol Ila, It is fresh, feisty, fruity and with a touch of the maritime. It is rather rich and well rounded. Chocolate wood smoke and orchard fruits. Vanilla notes and a mild nuttiness.
Taste: Medium body. It appears drier on the palate than what the nose promised. More spices as well. Hints of ashes and soot. Wood smoke still, mixed with apples, baked a little too long over an open fire.
Finish: Medium long finish. More fruity and light in character now. Peaty chewing gum in the end.
Comment: A mild monster, but a fine dram.
