Today I take a look at a whisky that was released last summer. The Glenglassaugh Octaves Peated has, as indicated by the name, been matured in octaves. The octaves used are 55 litre large (1/8 of a butt). You can read more about the product here.

I did find a reference online, somewhere, that said this whisky was about 7 YO, but unfortunately I did not make a note of where I found this. Officially it is a No Age Statement whisky.

You can buy a bottle of the Glenglassaugh Octaves Peated in the UK at around GBP 55. It is not yet for sale in Norway or Sweden.

Nose: Oaky sweetness is the first thing that comes to mind. The peatiness comes across as burnt toast at first, then later the toast is warm and covered with warm and floral honey. I also pick up cereal, vanilla and cinnamon sticks. It seems sweeter on the nose with time.

Taste: Medium body, a bit creamy in character. Spicy and just a little too sweet. Ginger, cinnamon, mint, tomato plant and basil. The sweetness is a slightly artificial in character - like aspartam. The peatiness is a bit more pronounced here - toasted oak and burnt toast with honey.

Finish: Medium long finish. Ends with a mix of oaky sweetness and cinnamon. Somewhat watery now.

Comments: A bit lacking in balance and body for me, but certainly interesting.
