Glenkinchie 1991 24 YO (Special Release 2016)
Glenkinchie 1991 24 YO (Special Release 2016), 57,2 %
I have not quite finished with the Diageo Special release 2016 whiskies. Today I look more closely at the Glenkinchie 1991 24 YO (Special Release 2016). It distilled in 1991, then was matured for 24 years in refill European oak butts. The total outturn was 5928 bottles. This is, as far as I can tell, the oldest ever official bottling of cask strength Glenkinchie.
You can still buy the Glenkinchie 1991 24 YO (Special Release 2016) in Norway at NOK 2600 (6391601), and in the UK at around GBP 300. So, in other words, a fair amount cheaper in Norway then...
Nose: Delicate and tantalising upon first approach. I'm thinking this will be interesting and fun. Let's get a bit closer... Apple orchard in the late Autumn. Raisins, dates and apricots - but gently. A deep and tempered sweetness that has elements of fruits, vanilla, oak, and cloves.
Taste: Rich and a little bit rough mouthfeel - but in a good way! Rich fruitiness like on the nose. Again a mix of dried fruits and ripe apples. A bit more caramel now, as well as oaky spices. There is a citrus element here in the form of lime or lime juice.
Finish: Medium long finish. fades away faster than I want it to, and it does lose the sweetness along the way - leaving us with something a little less than what was desired and expected. A touch oaky and watery right there at the end.
Comments: Loved the nose here, and the initial taste. A little bit let down by the finish, but it is a great dram.
