Nordic Whisky # 249 - High Coast Silent Mills Collection 01 Marieberg
High Coast Silent Mills Collection 01 Marieberg, 7 YO, 51 %
Another fairly new release from Swedish distillery High Coast today. The High Coast Silent Mills Collection 01 Marieberg is a heavily peated whisky, clocking in at 44 ppm. It has been matured in a mix of 1st fill bourbon and new American oak casks. The composition is as follows; 21 bourbon barrels filled in 2012 and emptied in 2020. Plus six bourbon barrels filled in 2012, then transferred in 2015 to ten 95-100 litre new American oak casks. All in all a limited run of 10087 bottles.
See the official product page for all the details. Here is a brief summary:
Silent Mills is a series where we delve deeper into our peated recipe and talk about a soon forgotten chapter in the history of Sweden and the High Coast, the sawmill era. The Silent Mills series is based on Timmer in our Origins series and its smoky flavour. Silent Mills is also a tribute to the many sawmills that once edged the beaches of the Ångermanälven in the area where our distillery is now located, sawmills that have long been silenced.
The High Coast Silent Mills Collection 01 Marieberg is available to buy in Sweden at SEK 799 (072602).
UPDATE 2021-06-15: This whisky is now also available in Norway at NOK 1100 (13215802).
Nose: Vanilla, mint and wood smoke. Marshmallows with a sprinkling of ashes. Ripe, red apples. Deeper and richer by the minute.
Taste: Yowza! Hello! Sit up straight! This is fiery and feisty. Fruity, peaty and spicy. Behind all the fireworks I find a nice base of sugary sweetness and tropical fruits.
Finish: Medium long finish. It does loose a lot of the initial fun fairly quickly, but it remains enjoyable ‘till the end.
Comment: Delightful.
