Jura Tastival 2014
Jura Tastival 2014, NAS, 44 %
Jura Distillery arranges their own whisky festival during the Feis Ile on Islay. On May 28 and 29 this year they hosted a number of tastings, and of course released a special festival bottling.
The Jura Tastival is a No Age Statement whisky. The contents are at least 12 years old, and the creation of this whisky is rather complex. This is not that surprising when the master blender behind this product is Richard Paterson. He can work magic with different types of casks.
This whisky has been matured in old oloroso sherry casks, and has had a finish in new french (European) oak. Jura Tastival is a limited edition of 3000 bottles, and it is still available to buy online from Jura Distillery, at GBP 75.
Nose (22/25): Lots of fruits and fruit desserts, honey and orange marmalade. It is slightly floral, and there is a hint of oaky spiciness.
Taste (22/25): Soft and appealing vanilla/caramel notes. Dark fruits, oak and cinnamon. Silky and creamy.
Finish (21/25): Becomes drier, and the oak is more pronounced. More spicy, as well; ginger and some pepper. Long finish.
Balance (22/25): I quite enjoyed this whisky. I used to be a bit critical of Jura, but I see a transformation going on over the last few years. I will delve into their core range shortly, to give you my impressions.
