Ledaig 1997 16 YO Svenska Eldvatten, 50,3 %

Ledaig 1997 16 YO Svenska EldvattenTime now for a brand new bottling from independent bottler Svenska Eldvatten. This is a peated whisky from Tobermory Distillery, a Ledaig. The  Ledaig 1997 16 YO Svenska Eldvatten was distilled in October 1997, matured in a bourbon hogshead (cask #SE038) and bottled in September 2014. The outturn was 120 bottles, but we were told by Svenska Eldvatten that they only bottled half the cask.

Ledaig 1997 16 YO Svenska Eldvatten is released in Norway on March 6 at NOK 1698 (item number 2161501). It will be released in Sweden on March 2 at 10 am, selling for SEK 1095 (item number 84953).

Nose (22/25): Peaty with the characteristic Tobermory mineral notes - it is sort of 'flinty'. None of the more sour notes that I sometimes find in Tobermory and Ledaig. Nice peaty notes, rich and sweet. Camphor and a hint of oak.

Taste (21/25): Peat, ashes, salt, camphor and old style apple jam. The mouth-feel is slightly oily.

Finish (22/25): Minerals/flinty, ginger, salt and a pinch of salt. It feels a bit fizzy in the mouth, which is always a fun effect, I think. Warm and long finish.

Balance (21/25): A fine dram for a fishing trip, I would imagine. Having been to Tobermory and the Isle of Mull, I can certainly recognize where this whisky comes from.

Score (86/100)
