Merchant's Mahogany Chest 1991 Glen Scotia, 46 %

Merchant's Mahogany Chest 1991 Glen Scotia (Wemyss Malts)I continue my exploration of single cask single malt releases from the independent bottler Wemyss Malts. Today I am testing the Merchant's Mahogany Chest 1991 Glen Scotia. Not very often that I come across IBs of Glen Scotia. This is a Campbeltown whisky, and it has been matured in a butt. I will be expecting some sherry influence here then, as well as some meat and vegetables (see previous reviews of Glen Scotia).

This whisky was distilled in 1991, and bottled in 2013. The total outturn was 807 bottles.

The Merchant's Mahogany Chest 1991 Glen Scotia is available to buy in Norway at NOK 1377 (item number 1594401), and in Sweden at SEK 1241 (item number 84405).

Nose (21/25): Citrus, dried apples, raw bacon, salt and well-worn leather sandals. After some time in the glass I also detect some mineral notes and a slight smokiness.

Taste (21/25): Sherry, chocolate, chili and salt. Ginger and pepper. Briny and mineral notes. Oily mouth-feel.

Finish (22/25): Nice, mellow, lingering. All the strange associations from nose and taste have settled down, and it is all a whole lot more harmonious and peaceful. Hints of shadows of memories of smoke linger in the background.

Balance (21/25): A very graceful landing for this whisky, after a bit of a topsy-turvy ride initially. It was a fun ride though!

Score (85/100)
