Michel Couvreur Blossoming Auld Sherried Single Malt Whisky

Michel Couvreur Blossoming Auld Sherried Single Malt Whisky, 14 YO, 45 %

This single malt was distilled at an undisclosed distillery in Scotland, then matured for at least 14 years by the independent bottler Michel Couvreur in Burgundy, France. So not quite a Scotch (as it is not matured and bottled in Scotland), and not quite French (as it is not distilled in France). But it is single malt whisky, and well worth exploring in further detail.

This whisky has been matured in fresh sherry casks for a minimum of 14 years. It was bottled 2018, as this is batch L. 2018006.

Michel Couvreur started maturing whisky in sherry casks in Burgundy back in 1978.

“Michel Couvreur passed away in 2013; his son-in-law Cyril Deschamps and his cellar master Jean-Arnaud Frantzen, with the invaluable help of Michel’s devoted wife Marthe and his daughter Alexandra, follow to the letter the philosophy and the motto of the house: Virtute et Opera.”

The Michel Couvreur Blossoming Auld Sherried Single Malt Whisky is still available in Norway, at NOK 2297 (12622601).

Nose: Deep, warm and very sherried nose. Dried fruits - yet they are very juicy. Go figure. With time it takes on a more creamy character. Also there is citrus now. And I approve.

Taste: Very smooth. Full bodied and full flavoured. Dried fruits, juicy ripe fruits, pickled fruits, canned fruits, fresh fruits, baked fruits. Delightfully fruity and surprisingly complex without being very complex, if you catch my drift. You probably don’t, but what do I care? Huh? Of course, I care. But, this is not a conversation, is it? If so, it is rather one sided. So trust me. OK? Complex - yet not complex. In a delightful way. OK?

Finish: Medium to long finish. Lighter and sweeter now. The fruits are accompanied by simple syrup, creamy vanilla and and hand pressed orange juice (yes, it must be hand pressed).

Comment: I enjoyed the heck out of this.

Score 90/100
