Nordic Whisky #279 - Myken Extra Virgin Swede 2020
Myken Extra Virgin Swede 2020, 4.5 YO, 47 %
This whisky from Norwegian producer Myken Distillery was released in February 2021, and it was in fact bottled in 2021 as well. But the labels had already been printed, and the original plan was to bottle it before year end, thus the “2020” in the product name.
The Myken Extra Virgin Swede 2020 was initially matured in 4 small 40 litre virgin Swedish oak casks (later used for the Myken Swedish Oak 2020 for the Swedish market). Then, after a year, the spirit was transferred into 4 small 40 litre ex-bourbon casks, and remained there for 3.5 years. This whisky is unpeated, and limited to 260 bottled.
The Myken Extra Virgin Swede 2020 was available at NOK 1200 (50 cl) (12670102), but seems to now be sold out.
Nose: Highly approachable and aromatic. Hints of coffee and spices. Earthy cinnamon. Vanilla. Not really picking up the trademark sweet oakiness from the Swedish oak (Yay for that!). More coffee as well as some medium dark chocolate with time. Hints of green herbs.
Taste: Medium body. Assorted spices. Herbal, cold coffee. Cinnamon, vanilla and ginger. Softly oaky.
Finish: Medium long finish. Creamy vanilla and cold coffee. Reminds me of Frappuccino actually. Fizzy ginger and ripe oranges in the end.
Comment: Creamy extravagance, luscious liquid.
