Nikka Super - Rare Old

Nikka Super - Rare Old, 43 %

This is a Japanese blended whisky with a fair bit of history. It was launched by Nikka back in 1962! It has been a big seller for the distillery for many, many years.

No details have been revealed about age, component whiskies or cask use. But I would say it is a given that it contains single malt from Yoichi, single malt and grain from Miyagikyo and possibly some imported single malt (I’m looking at you, Ben Nevis).

A few bottles of the Nikka Super - Rare Old go on sale in Norway tomorrow at NOK 985 (7723501). You can also buy it in the UK at around GBP 53.

Nose: Surprisingly malty and rich on the nose. Caramel and vanilla. Chocolate and hints of citrus and toasted oak. Harmonious but a little simple.

Taste: Rich and fruity on the palate. Banana, malt, ginger, and caramel.

Finish: Short to medium long finish. More banana now, as well as milk chocolate. Hints of pepper.

Comment: A fine blend, but I must say I prefer the higher ABV Nikka Whisky From the Barrel.

Score 83/100
