Nikka Yoichi 5 YO Distillery Only, 63 %

A distillery only, single cask release (cask #407617), which I purchased at the Nikka Yoichi Distillery in 2015.

Nose: A light and vibrant fruitiness is what first meets my nose. It feels remarkably tempered and balanced at 63 % ABV and a mere 5 years old. Apple pie. Almonds. Vanilla, earthy cinnamon and notes of incense and cedar tree. With time a chocolate note that has a soft green side to it. With further time a mildly dirty side appears. Dirty in a good way. Oil smeared rags, an old garage, hints of greased cast iron. And a soft cocoa nibs flavored smokiness. The alcohol is so well integrated here it is ridiculous considering the strength and age.

Taste: Rich and full bodied. Pepper and cinnamon up front. Then creamy vanilla and milk chocolate. Apples and pears. Simple syrup. Fizzy ginger.

Finish: Medium long finish. Creamy vanilla and rich caramel sauce. Honey - floral and decadent.

Comment: This is world class. But that’s not really news to anyone, is it?
