Nordic Whisky #51 - Thy Whisky Fad No 1 'Kræn Klit'

Finally, we have managed to procure a bottle of Thy Whisky, from the craft distillery Nordisk Brænderi ('Nordic Distillery') in the north of Denmark (see Nordic Distillery Map). The man behind the distillery is Anders Bilgram. He produces gin, schnaps and whisky. On November 29, 2013, he launched his first whisky, the 'Special Edition No 1'. We have not yet tried this whisky, but we have now tried the second released from Nordisk Brænderi, the Thy Whisky Fad No 1.

Thy Whisky is the brand going forward, as the next release planned for late 2015 is also called Thy Whisky. 'Fad' is Danish for cask, so this is cask no 1. The whisky is produced from two-row barley of the type Power, grown at the Gyrup farm near the Thy national park. The barley was floor malted at Fuglebjerggaard Farm north of Copenhagen.

Thy Whisky Fad No 1 is a single cask release, sold in 50 cl bottles, at DKK 1250. It was matured in a sherry cask, and the total outturn was 336 bottles.

This whisky is sold out at the distillery shop, but you can still pick it up at select stores in Denmark.

Nose (23/25): Wow! What a perfectly lovely sherry nose! I am immediately blown away here. Very soft, very delicate - but also rich. Dried fruits, cinnamon, malt and just a big dollop of Christmas, really. I also pick up notes of vanilla, toffee and mint. Very nice!

Taste (21/25): Rich and full mouthfeel. Cinnamon, mild spices and dried fruits. It feels a bit like a rich rum, really, and the hints of mint only strengthen that impression.

Finish (20/25): Medium long finish, quite warm. Caramel, dried fruits and the mint is now more peppermint.

Balance (22/25): An impressive dram, I would say. Looking forward to try the Thy Whisky Fad No 2A (bourbon with sherry finish) and Fad No 2B (bourbon with bourbon finish - (re-casked)), and maybe we can manage to find a sample of the 'Special Edition No 1' somewhere...

Score (86/100)
