Juuri Rye

Juuri Rye

I do tend to stretch the term 'whisky' from time to time in this series. I just want to cover all possible whisky related releases from all the Nordic Whisky distilleries. Today I am reviewing the Juuri Rye, an unaged single malt rye from Kyrö Distillery Company in Finland. I have previously reviewed their Verso Rye, which is a malted rye aged for a minimum of four months.

Kyrö Distillery Company plan to release their first Nordic Rye Whisky in 2017.

The Juuri Rye is available to buy in Norway at NOK 555 (2204202), and in Sweden at SEK 369 (8587302).

Nose (21/25): Very new make-y, but I mean that in a good sense. I am thinking the kind of new make that is actually very nice, and drinkable straight off the spirit still. That's not always the case... The rye is, naturally, very noticeable. Notes of rye bread and rye mash. I also pick up spices, citrus notes, mild licorice and some chocolate. Very clean and crisp nose.

Taste (21/25): Spicy and malty (again the rye is very pronounced, which is very good). Tempered sweetness - sugary in character.

Finish (20/25): Sweeter on the finish, and more fruity. The spices are more toned down in the end. Again very clean. Medium to short finish - no surprise there.

Balance (20/25): Another fine product from Kyrö Distillery Company. I must say I am looking forward to 2017. Bring it on, guys!

Score (82/100)
