Nordic Whisky #67 - Stauning Traditional 1st Edition

Today I start my review run on the unpeated 'Traditional' expressions from Danish distillery Stauning. The Stauning Traditional 1st Edition. This was a limited release of 728 bottles, bottled at a cask strength of 63.3 % ABV. The whisky has been matured exclusively in first fill ex-bourbon barrels from Makers Mark.

From what Stauning themselves say on their website, this was the second distilled whisky from the distillery, but the fifth bottling they released.

The Stauning Traditional 1st Edition used to sell for DKK 1495 from the distillery, but they are now sold out. You can still get a bottle online at DKK 5999.

Nose (21/25): Sugary and rich. Lots of vanilla. Malty. Some licorice - the sweet kind. Mild fruity character. Hints of strawberries.

Taste (17/25): Way too raw for me! Big alcohol bite. Sort of minty and herbal. Pepper and licorice. Cough medicine. This does not really remind me of a whisky.

Finish (18/25): Short finish. Warm. The burn stops, and there's more of the herbal sweetness.

Balance (18/25): Not really balanced at all. This whisky was released too young for me. It certainly shows promise, and the nose is quite nice, but it falls through on the taste. I am looking forward to try the later releases. Watch this space next week for more Stauning Traditional.
