Nordic whisky #225 - Smögen Jubilee 2018

Smögen Jubilee 2018, 7 YO, 61 %

It is time again for a Swedish west coast whisky again. My glass is filled with the Smögen Jubilee 2018.

This is a very limited release of 160 bottles, matured in 1st fill Sauternes barriques. It was distilled Spring 2011, and bottled in July 2018. All whiskies from SMögen are peated, and this one clocks in at 50+ ppm.

The Smögen Jubilee 2018 was bottled for Smögen 8 year anniversary.

Nose: Less peaty than expected from the usually very peaty Smögen. The sweet wine notes mix well with the peatiness, tempering the smouldering fire if you will. It comes across as relatively light overall. Light fruitiness, the crust of fresh baked bread, almonds and hints of mustard seeds. Cold coffee and vanilla. None of the green notes I usually find in Smögen whisky.

Taste: Medium body, heavy on the spices and sweetness. Ashes and coal. Earthy, wet leaves, a touch of green now.

Finish: Medium to short finish. Still a bit greener - tomato plant, mint and pine wood. White pepper, oak and nuts on the finish. It is cut short too early - I wanted more. Quite dry in the end.

Comment: Intriguing nose!

Score 86/100
