SMWS G5.12 Varnished banana

SMWS G5.12 Varnished banana, 31 YO, 51.7 %

Another independent bottling from Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Distillery G5 is the grain distillery Invergordon.

Invergordon is owned by Whyte and Mackay, and this grain whisky is an important base component in all their blended whisky products.

The SMWS G5.12 Varnished banana was distilled back in 1987-11-03. It was matured in a 2nd fill bourbon barrel, and the total outturn was 224 bottles.

Nose: This is a dram that works on two levels. Playful fruity top notes dance around happily over a solid base of rich, full and sweet oaky, earthy, spicy loveliness. With time I also find juicy strawberries and fat cream.

Taste: Spicy and full bodied. Spicy banana split. Somewhat dry in character. Creamy. Citrus and ginger.

Finish: Long finish. Mint, soft spices, and some oakiness. Dark chocolate with sweet liqueur filling.

Comment: A great grain!
