It has been almost four years since I last reviewed a Tamnavulin whisky, and that was an independent bottling. This is only my second review of whisky from this relatively young distillery. The Tamnavulin Double Cask is the first official release from the distillery since the 1990s. It was announced on 2017-08-18.

Tamnavulin Distillery was established in 1966, by Invergordon Distillers. It is located in Tamnavoulin, Speyside. In 1993 Whyte & Mackay bought the distillery, and just two years later it was mothballed. In 2007, the same year Whyte & Mackay itself was bought by United Spirits, the distillery was re-opened. Today the distillery has an annual production of around 4 million litres.

The Tamnavulin Double Cask is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. It has been matured in American oak barrels, and then finished in sherry casks.

You can buy the Tamnavulin Double Cask in Norway at NOK 450 (7881401), in Sweden at SEK 339 (81900), and online in the UK at around GBP 33.

Nose: Banana cake, apples, vanilla, caramel sauce and notes of oak. Starts off relatively mild, but turns slightly darker with time. Chocolate and chocolate mousse are new associations after a few minutes. Still soft and fluffy, but darker clouds are on the horizon.

Taste: Positively rich mouthfeel. Medium sweetness. Slightly bitter chocolate with orange marmalade filling. Soft spices.

Finish: Medium long finish. Milk chocolate and white chocolate. Mild caramel sauce. Vanilla ice cream. Soft and delicate landing. More sweet towards the end.

Comments: A fluffy little cloud of a dram. Makes me smile.
