Teaninich 1999 17 YO (Special Releases 2017)Time to start reviewing the Diageo Special Releases for 2017. I start with the Teaninich 1999 17 YO (Special Releases 2017). The Highland distillery Teaninich actually celebrate its 200 year anniversary this year. It is an old and traditional distillery, but they are also fairly modern. Teaninich is the only distillery in Scotland using a mash filter press (installed in 2000) instead of mash tuns.

The Teaninich 1999 17 YO (Special Releases 2017) has been matured in refill American oak hogsheads and sherry butts.

You can buy the Teaninich 1999 17 YO (Special Releases 2017) in Norway starting December 15 at NOK 3666 (7900701). You can also buy this whisky in Sweden at SEK 3499 (4007601), and online at around GBP 224.

Nose: This is solid and balanced. Nice depth and rich sweetness. Dark chocolate with hints of raspberry jam and orange marmalade in the back. Soft fruitiness.

Taste: Medium body, slightly dry. Pepper base with fruit topping. Somewhat dark. Almost gunpowder-ish, but no hints of sulphur.

Finish: Medium to long finish. Dry-ish, dark chocolate and coffee. Feels a bit like a rich stout on the finish. Add to that some vanilla and hints of citrus.

Comments: Unusual, exciting and cool - stranger things! Not often we get a chance to try a single malt from this distillery. Too bad about the price...

Score (87/100)
