Visiting Hiernagla Distillery

Nestled in the scenic landscape of Sveio, Norway, Hiernagla Brenneri stands as a testament to Norway's burgeoning whisky industry. Established in January 2018, this small-scale craft distillery has rapidly gained recognition for its commitment to producing high quality single malt whisky.

A Name Rooted in History

The name "Hiernagla" translates to 'sword rivet' in Old Norse, reflecting a deep connection to the region's rich Viking heritage. The distillery's logo draws inspiration from a 3,000-year-old gold bangle discovered near the site, symbolizing a bridge between ancient traditions and modern craftsmanship.

The Visionary Behind the Distillery

At the heart of Hiernagla Brenneri is Reidar Horneland, the distillery manager, master blender, and principal owner. His passion and dedication have been instrumental in steering the distillery's vision of creating the world's finest single malt whisky.

Location and Accessibility

Situated at Ekrene Næringspark 30, 5550 Sveio, the distillery is conveniently accessible. Travelers often find it easiest to fly into Stavanger and embark on a scenic drive to reach the distillery, immersing themselves in Norway's picturesque west coast.

Production Milestones

Hiernagla commenced whisky production on October 27, 2019. With an annual production capacity of 25,000 liters, the distillery produced approximately 9,000 liters in 2024. Their inaugural single malt, Ravnafloke, was launched on November 1, 2023, marking a significant milestone in their journey.

Diverse Whisky Portfolio

The distillery showcases versatility in its offerings. Here are my brief highlights on their first three single malt whisky releases:

  • Ravnafloke: This 3-year-old single malt boasts a softly spicy aroma with hints of cinnamon, creamy vanilla, and strawberries paired with gingerbread. On the palate, it presents a full-bodied experience with an assertive spice profile balanced by rich, creamy fruitiness.

  • Torfæus: Released on May 8, 2024, this peated whisky offers notes of apricot, mango, spicy wood, sticky toffee, and honey.

  • Tora: Released in November 2014, an unpeated whisky. The nose is sweet and fruity, with notes of caramel, chocolate, and honey layered over toasted oak and pepper, evoking a dark, autumnal feel. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and richly sweet, dominated by honey, chocolate, and nuts, finishing medium-long with creamy, stout-like chocolate and nutty layers reminiscent of a Snickers bar.

Sustainable Practices

Hiernagla Brenneri is deeply committed to environmental sustainability:

  • Renewable Energy: Approximately half of the distillery's energy consumption is sourced from solar panels installed on the roof.

  • Heat Recycling: Innovative heat recovery systems are employed, where still cooling water is repurposed to heat brewing water and for floor heating within the distillery. Additionally, pot ale heat is recovered, and insulation covers are used on the boiling parts of stills.

  • Waste Management: Draff, a byproduct of the whisky-making process, is utilized as cattle feed, ensuring minimal waste.

  • Reforestation Initiatives: Demonstrating a commitment to carbon sequestration, the distillery plants one tree for each liter of whisky sold in a BIO-CCS forest on Norway's west coast.

  • Sustainable Sourcing: The distillery procures malt from responsible malteries that emphasize emission reduction, aligning with their eco-friendly ethos.
