Warenghem Roof Rye Double Maturation

Warenghem Roof Rye Double Maturation, 11 YO, 46 %

warenghem-roof-rye.jpg

A European rye today, from French distiller Distillerie Warenghem.

Here is the official description of the product:

“Distilled in Britanny, this Rye Whisky matured during 9 years in Sherry Casks with the soft and humid climate of the Pink Granite Coast.

It then matured during two years under the dry and sunny climate from Provence, in new casks, in order to mark them with the “American way”.

The Warenghem Roof Rye Double Maturation is available to buy in Norway at NOK 562 (50 cl) (11285802). It is also available directly from the distillery at € 52, although that is a slightly different version at 43 % ABV. The 46 % ABV is for Norway only apparently.

Nose: A soft and weirdly sweet nose. I detect mild pepper and some fruitiness, but not a whole lot more. It comes across as a strange one.

Taste: Soft and sweet again on the palate. I get a lot of chewing gum now. It remains a bit strange. Pepper and vanilla.

Finish: Medium long finish. Still strange, if you can believe it. Aspartam sweetener, chewing gum and pepper.

Comment: A teenybopper rye? Not sure what to make of this one..

Score 83/100
