This is the first Mexican whisky I have ever tried. The producer is Destilería y Bodega Abasolo, They create their whisky from 100 % ancestral corn, and this very first product was bottled and released in 2020.

This is some of what they say on their official site:

“Abasolo El Whisky De Mexico is crafted and distilled from 100% Mexican Cacahuazintle (kaka • wha • SINT • lay) corn, which has been cultivated and passed down for more than 200 generations by local farmers for its distinct, extraordinary flavor.“

[..]

“Abasolo uncovers the deepest flavors of ancestral corn through nixtamalization, a 4,000-year-old cooking technique never before used in whisky production, but fundamental in preparing corn as food in Mexico.”

[..]

“The obtained corn distillate is matured in new toasted and used oak casks in an open warehouse with a light roof and no walls where temperature fluctuations and changing conditions provide a unique aging profile before Abasolo is bottled.”

You can buy the Abasolo El Whisky De Mexico in Norway at NOK 689 (12643901), in Swedn at SEK 539 (8431701), and in the UK at around GBP 40.

Nose: Corn sweetness, but a rather different style than what you get on a (high corn) bourbon. This is a bit darker, a bit earthy in style. It also feels young, newmake-ish but no off notes. Chocolate and vanilla with time.

Taste: Medium to thin body. White pepper, vanilla and corn sweetness. Again a little newmake-ish.

Finish: Medium long finish. Creamy milk chocolate, honey and vanilla. Nuts and green herbs in the end.

Comment: Fine if a bit young.

Score 79/100
