Aberlour 12 YO Double Cask Matured

Today I review a classic from the Speyside distillery Aberlour. The Aberlour 12 YO Double Cask Matured is so named because it has been matured in both traditional oak and sherry casks. It used to be bottled at an ABV of 43 %, but this was sadly changed a couple of years back to the current ABV of 40 %. Why not move up to 46 % instead?!

You can buy the Aberlour 12 YO Double Cask Matured in Norway at NOK 509 (1284301), in Sweden at SEK 389 (529). In the UK the price is around GBP 39.

Nose: A typical Aberlour nose; lots of delicate, dried fruits, and rich notes of Orchard fruits. I also detect vanilla, creamy caramel sauce and hints of nuts (no allergy warning).

Taste: Rich and bold in style. Showing me that it isn't necessarily all about ABV when you want to deliver a full-bodied whisky. Dried fruits again - of various kinds. Apples with a sprinkling of icing sugar.

Finish: Medium long finish. The fruits partly make way for a mild spiciness - mainly white pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Comments: A classic that should be re-visited.
