I actually find it less and less interesting to review super expensive whiskies that are more or less impossible to obtain or even taste. I hope and believe it is also more interesting for you, dear reader, to see reviews of whiskies you might actually get to try for yourself.

On rare occasions through, I have to make an exception, and I gladly make exceptions for the annual special releases from Diageo - if I can get my hands on a sample.

Anywho, I have now tasted the single grain Port Dundas 1964 52 YO (Special Releases 2017). This whisky has been matured in refill American hogsheads, and the outturn was 752 bottles.

Nose: Strawberry fields forever. Top notes of red berries and flower meadows. Then deeper and warmer notes set in; Orchard fruits and dark spicy notes. Cinnamon sticks, old oak and hints of incense. Easily dismissed as a lightweight at first sniff, but persist and you shall be richly rewarded. It is a delight.

Taste: Medium body and medium sweetness. Candy store flavors - fruit drops, marshmallows of various kinds (yes, there are variants!), caramel sauce and white chocolate.

Finish: Medium to long finish. The red berries from the nose reappear now, along with fleeting pepper notes.

Comments: Wow! What a perfect, little treat!
