Archie Rose Single Malt Whisky

Archie Rose Single Malt Whisky, NAS, 46%

This Australian distillery, located in Sydney, use a complex six malt mash bill in their whisky production. The six malts are: Pale Malt, Peated Pale Malt, Amber Malt, Caramel Malt, Roasted Malt, and Chocolate Malt. All malt originates from Australia, except for the peated pale malt which is sourced from Scotland. Matured predominantly in 100L, 200L and 300L ex-Australian apera casks (Australian fortified wine similar to sherry), with a small addition of ex-bourbon casks and Archie Rose’s own ex-rye malt casks.

The Archie Rose Distilling Co. was established in 2014. In 2020 they opened a new distillery in Botany, Sydney.

I tasted this whisky as whisky No. 6/24 in the 2024 Whisky Tour of the World from Gravity Drinks.

You can buy the Archie Rose Single Malt Whisky directly from the distillery at AUS$ 119.

Nose: A complex swirl of aromas greets me, starting with coffee and dried fruits — dates, figs, and raisins. Notes of toasted oak, dark chocolate, honey and a subtle whiff of wood smoke follow. Over time, earthy hints of vanilla, cinnamon, and cardamom emerge.

Taste: Medium-bodied with initial flavors of ashes, dark chocolate mousse, and toasted oak. This is followed by black and white pepper, along with hints of soot. The profile rounds out with dried fruits and a touch of simple syrup.

Finish: Medium-long, where caramel enters the mix, bringing a sweeter and slightly lighter tone. The dried fruits are now joined by hints of citrus and a subtle, indeterminate bitterness. Cacao nibs and a coffee-chocolate milkshake linger pleasantly at the end.

Comment: Thoroughly enjoyable!
