Puni Gold

Puni Gold, 5 YO, 43%

Time to finally try an Italian single malt. The Puni Gold is one of the core range products of Puni Distillery in Northern Italy.

The mash bill for this whisky consists mostly of malted barley, but there is a small amount of malted rye and malted wheat added in the mix. Hence Puni calls their core range product triple malt whiskies. The Puni Gold has been matured exclusively in ex-bourbon barrels.

I tasted this whisky as whisky No. 22/24 in the 2024 Whisky Tour of the World from Gravity Drinks.

The Puni Gold can be ordered directly from the distillery at €50.

Nose: The nose presents a "dry" character with notes of white pepper, old books, and soft oakiness. Vanilla and white chocolate add a subtle sweetness.

Taste: Full-bodied, surprisingly robust for its 43% ABV. Creamy vanilla, white pepper, and toasted oak lead the palate, with ripe orchard fruits lingering in the background.

Finish: Medium-long, where the rich creaminess gradually fades. It becomes drier and a bit spicier towards the end, with lingering fruitiness that takes on a more tropical note.

Comment: Impressive depth for its ABV, though it leaves you wishing the creaminess stayed a bit longer.

Score 84/100
