BenRiach Cask Strength Batch 1, NAS, 57,2 %

BenRiach Cask Strength Batch 1Today I am reviewing the BenRiach Cask Strength Batch 1which was released back in March 2016. This is a 'similar' product to the GlenDronach Cask Strength (same owners - same marketing team).

You can pick up a bottle of the BenRiach Cask Strength Batch 1 in Norway at NOK 1040 (5396401). It appears to be sold out in the UK already, but expect a new batch to appear soon.

Nose: Light and delicate notes. Banana, and orchard fruits. Vanilla and a touch of maltiness. After a few minutes I also pick up coconut oil and a mild oakiness - like fine and dry sawdust.

Taste: A rather raw mouthfeel - it feels a bit rough and young. Lots of spices, and surprisingly much oakiness on the palate. This tastes like fresh oak and caramel - with a slightly bitter edge to it.

Finish: Medium to short finish. Some honey added now, but it is soon overpowered by the oakiness again. Towards the end the bitterness abates, and it turns watery.

Comments: I could not quite come to terms with this whisky. The nose is pleasant enough, but the palate appears too young and raw for me.

Score (78/100)
