Nordic Whisky #145 - Box Whisky Dálvve
Box Whisky Dálvve, 5 YO, 46 %
The first ever core range product from Box Whisky in Sweden was released recently. This is a momentous occasion for any distillery, and marks a coming of age for the company. The Box Whisky Dálvve is also the first product they release in a 70 cl bottle. The name Dálvve is sami for "winter".
This whisky is 5 years old, has been matured in 1st fill bourbon casks, and is lightly to medium peated at 11 ppm. The first batch, which I have tried here, was 14 000 bottles large. Batch 2 already out.
You can get all the very detailed facts about this release here.
You can buy the Box Whisky Dálvve in Norway at NOK 650 (7778601), in Sweden at SEK 481 (8512401), and online in the UK at around GBP 60.
Nose: Mild and a bit closed up. There's a light oakiness here. Vanilla, hints of cereal, Mentholatum, apple juice, ripe pears and coconut oil. The peat is not very noticeable, but it is there - playing in the background. I also pick up some honey and chocolate here.
Taste: Medium body and smooth mouthfeel. Oaky spices is what strikes me at first. Slightly green - minty. White pepper, sea-salt and a backdrop of wood smoke.
Finish: Medium to short finish. Caramel, wet oak planks, toasted oak, and a light fruitiness. Powdered sugar and vanilla. Towards the end I pick up a somewhat bitter note, and it also turns a bit watery.
Comments: A very decent entry level, core range, whisky. Congrats, Box Whisky!
