Jura One for the Road
Jura One for the Road, 22 YO, 47 %
A fine, old Jura is on the test bench today. The Jura One for the Road was released September 1, 2016. This was a limited relase of 5000 bottles.
This whisky has been matured in bourbon casks, then received a 9 year (!) finish in casks that had previously held Pinot Noir red wine.
Here is the brief description given by the distillery:
A fitting tribute to a lifetime of work, this special expression allows us to say thank you to Willie Cochrane after 39 years of work at Jura Distillery. His contribution over 11 years as Distillery Manager has helped shape the future of Jura Whisky, so we hope you'll raise a dram with us to toast to the man himself. Sláinte!
The Jura One for the Road is now sold out, as far as I can see. The sales price was GBP 120.
Nose: Raisins, dark berries swimming in a rich butter caramel sauce. Rich , deep and delightful. Malty. Leather and earthy notes. Opens up gradually, and just keeps on giving.
Taste: Medium body and smooth mouthfeel. A bit dry, actually. Dried fruits again. raisins. Caramel and dark chocolate. Hints of earthy notes.
Finish: Medium long finish. The chocolate is darker. Nice warmth. Rich and then it gradually becomes drier towards the end. Sublime fruit notes on the final stretch. It is surprising how little sweetness there is on the finish, but it works a charm.
Comments: Wow, now that's what I call a proper farewell dram!
