Glenfiddich 19 YO Age of Discovery Red Wine Cask Finish
Glenfiddich 19 YO Age of Discovery Red Wine Cask Finish, 40 %
Here we are then, with the third and final release in the Age of Discovery Series from Glenfiddich - the Glenfiddich 19 YO Age of Discovery Red Wine Cask Finish. This whisky has received a finish for an unspecified period in casks that have previously held South American red wine.
Here is the official blurb on the release:
We created the third expression in our Age of Discovery Collection to commemorate the 1831 voyage of the HMS Beagle. The Beagle travelled around the globe and landed on the east coast of South America, allowing Charles Darwin to collect fossils that would lead to the development of his famous theory of evolution.
You can pick up a bottle of the Glenfiddich 19 YO Age of Discovery Red Wine Cask Finish online at around GBP 83.
Nose: Earthy notes dominate the nose on this dram. Wet leaves, think of a foot path through the woods in the Autumn. Wine-y notes, lots of red berries. Vanilla, mustard seeds and icing sugar.
Taste: Rich and full-bodied. Lots of spices up front (black pepper, ginger and chili), but it is a flash wave. Then I get lots of mellow, laid-back and wonderful earthy notes mixed with baked apples, grapes and cinnamon.
Finish: Medium long finish. I do wish it had lasted longer, because that first hit was delicious! The spices make a welcome return after a few seconds, now balancing the fruity notes. The earthy base is there throughout.
Comments: Enjoyable dram!
