High Coast Mongolica

High Coast Mongolica, 6 YO, 48,8%

Quite an unusual expression on the test bench now. I’ve often compared the Nordic approach to whisky production to that of the Japanese. Here we have sort of a union of Sweden and Japan (well Asia), as this is a High Coast single malt predominantly matured in Quercus Mongolica. In fact 89.14 % of this product has been matured in virgin Quercus Mongolica casks, and 10.86 % matured in 1st fill ex-bourbon casks.

The High Coast Mongolica was launched in Sweden on April 14, 2023 and sold at SEK 819 (4140702) in Sweden.

Nose: Fresh orchard fruits, hot fudge, and a mix of exotic spices. There are also hints of creamy vanilla, apricots, earthy cinnamon, almond paste, and a worn leather aroma.

Taste: Full-bodied and a bit rough. There's a spicy or oaky flavor that's quite noticeable. There are also background notes of cigar box and leather. Ripe red apples.

Finish: Medium to long, with a fresh and lively character. It ends with flavors of menthol, spearmint, and mint-flavored Vilhelmina sweets.

Comment: This is an unusual whisky, but it's definitely worth trying.

Score 86/100
