Isle of Raasay Hebridian Single Malt

Isle of Raasay Hebridian Single Malt, 3 YO, 46.4 %

This signature single malt from Isle of Raasay, first released in September 2021, has been matured in a combination of all their six single malt recipe casks. Peated and unpeated whisky matured in either virgin Chinkapin oak casks, 1st fill ex-rye casks, or 1st fill ex-Bordeaux red wine casks. This is the second batch, known as the R-02. It is a heavily peated whisky, with a peat level in the range of 48-52 in the malt, and an estimated residual peat level of 12 ppm in the bottle.

Nose: Oaky sweetness, vanilla, and malt. Wood smoke in the distance. With time lemon zest, lemon sorbet and lemon curd. In other words, I do detect some lemon here. Marzipan and white pepper. Mustard seeds.

Taste: Medium body. Sweet and creamy. Citrus and soft oaky spiciness. Peppery soot and wood smoke - but tempered.

Finish: Medium to short finish. Remains sweet, a bit heavy handed - oaky sweetness. Juicy marzipan. The peat feels a bit more aggressive towards the end - more peppery and dark.

Comment: Rather complex for a three year old. Definitely a distillery to follow.

Score 83/100
