Well, this is unusual. An unpeated Kilchoman?! The Kilchoman 2012 8 YO The Kilchoman Club - Ninth Edition was distilled 2012-08-23, and bottled 2020-11-16. Matured in four 1st fill Oloroso sherry hogsheads (cask #548, 549, 550, 551/2012), and with a total outturn of 1311 bottles.

Nose: Dark and almost dirty. Really no peat here? Hmm. There’s a meaty base here, as well as rich and sherried fruits. Vanilla and cinnamon. With time deeper notes of rich sweetness. Salty chocolate, white pepper and hints of citrus.

Taste: Deep, dark, rich and big. Earthy and meaty. It feels almost as if it was supposed to be peaty as well, but it works well as is. Chocolate and black pepper. Briny.

Finish: Long finish. Gradually more and more dry. Gunpowder (but no negative sulphur notes) and cold ashes (but not peaty - if that makes sense). Softly metallic and salty.

Comment: The most peated unpeated whisky I have ever tasted. I’m confused but pleased.

Score 88/100
