Kura The Whisky Rum Cask Finish

This is the “First and Only Whisky Brand with Japanese Rum cask finish”. The Kura The Whisky Rum Cask Finish is a blended malt from Helios Distillery, Japan. I have previously reviewed one other product from Helios (see review).

I haven't found a whole lot of information on this product. But it appears it is made from whisky imported from Scotland, and then finished in Helios' own ex-rum casks (source).

The name "Kura" is taken from the barrel-aged awamori produced at Helios Distillery.

You can buy the Kura The Whisky Rum Cask Finish in Norway at NOK 979 (10480401), and in the UK at around GBP 92.

Nose: Light fruitiness, vanilla, mild earthy notes. With time it appears a bit darker. The earthiness weighs a bit more, wet leaves and damp soil. Now I also pick up notes of leather, tobacco and citrus tea. The nose really does grow on me (No, I am not Pinocchio!). A touch of peat sneaks in as well. It smells a bit like rye.

Taste: Light and with medium body. Again the light fruitiness - fresh, green apples mainly. White pepper, cinnamon and simple syrup.

Finish: A relatively short finish. Wet planks and summer rain.

Comments: Comes across as a bit too young, although the nose is quite pleasant.
