So, Lot No. 40 is a brand owned by Corby Spirit and Wine Ltd, along with J.P. Wiser's Whisky. Both Lot No.40 and J.P. Wiser’s are produced by Hiram Walker & Sons Limited in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Corby Spirit and Wine Ltd is in turn majority-owned by Pernod Ricard. Just keepin' it simple.
The current expression of this rye whisky is made using 100% unmalted rye and the use of industrial enzymes during fermentation. The previous version of Lot No. 40 used 5% malted rye. There is also an increasing focus on the Brasetto rye variety in Lot No. 40 now. This whisky is now matured exclusively in new oak barrels. See Whisky Buzz for more details.
The Lot No.40 Canadian 100% Rye Single Pot Whisky is available in Norway at NOK 500 (19007101).
Nose: Rich caramel with a lively peppery kick. Creamy vanilla and ripe banana add a smooth sweetness, while warm citrus notes develop with time.
Taste: Medium-bodied, with an intensified peppery presence. Slightly burnt caramel and banana take center stage, supported by nutty undertones and a refreshing hint of mint.
Finish: Medium to short. Clean and crisp, with lingering notes of pepper and caramel.
Comment: A balanced dram.
