The Old Pulteney 18 YO is another brand new addition to the Old Pulteney core range. It will remain a UK exclusive until it is launched internationally (including Norway) in January 2019. Other new core range additions include the Old Pulteney Huddart (review) and the Old Pulteney 15 YO (review).

This whisky has been mainly matured in bourbon casks, and then finished in Spanish oak Oloroso sherry butts.

Nose: Apples and mild caramel sauce, with light notes of a salty sea breeze. Rich and complex. Vanilla ice cream, sweet raisins, dates and figs. Mild oakiness. More spicy on the nose with time; white pepper, cinnamon and salt.

Taste: Rich and full-bodied. Creamy mouthfeel, with honey and ripe apples. Warm caramel sauce, now with added white pepper, cinnamon, ginger and a spoonful of sherry. Milk chocolate.

Finish: Long finish. Creamy and honey sweet throughout. Notes that remind me of dark chocolate and ashes or soot, but without being smoky. Notes of citrus, herbs and wet grass towards the end.

Comments: Develops really well. A worthy replacement for the 17 YO.
