SMWS 153.1 The darkness and the light, 5 YO, 59.3%

Distilled 2017-06-07, matured in five 40L ex-Oloroso sherry casks for the first year, then consolidated into a single 1st fill ex-bourbon barrel for the remaining four years. Bottled in 2023, and limited to 219 bottles.

This is the first Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) release from Thy Whisky, Denmark.

Nose: Dried fruits and nuts at first, then lighter notes of vanilla, tropical fruits and citrus. With time toasted oak, chocolate mousse and exotic spices.

Taste: Big and very much full bodied. Ripe orchard fruits as well as dried fruits. Followed by notes of cinnamon, leather and cigar box.

Finish: Medium long finish. More of the same, but it does keep developing. More texture now, and notes of cacao beans and espresso coffee.

Comment: Surprisingly complex - and definitely playing both the dark and the light side.

Score 88/100
