SMWS B3.2 Ooey-gooey cinnamon bun
B3.2 Ooey-gooey cinnamon bun, 3 YO, 55,3 %
I find it very interesting that the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) is branching out and adding not only Japanese whisky, grain and cider, but also bourbon. The B3.2 Ooey-gooey cinnamon bun is a three year old bourbon from Rock Town Distillery in Arkansas, USA. It was distilled on 2012-02-20, matured in a virgin American oak barrel (of course!) and the total outturn was 204 bottles.
This whisky was released on November 13, 2015, and sold at GBP 59. I would definitely have picked up a bottle then, if I had had the chance.
Here are the tasting notes from the label on the bottle:
Warm, sweet and spicy aromas followed by a Dark 'n' Stormy. Full-on taste; cinnamon sticks dipped in molasses and a boozy Jaffa cake. Diluted, aromatherapy using perfumed wood and herbal essences and on the palate, rum soaked sultanas in banana bread.
Nose: Rich, sweet and almost sticky on the nose. There is all sorts of warm, sweet and sticky stuff here - and it is very nice. The only drawback is that there is some alcohol bite here, and the perfume touch is a bit heavy. Given some time in the glass it does settle down, and the massive and sticky sweetness subsides. I now find more vanilla notes, banana and mango.
Taste: Rich, warm and 'grainy'. I guess that will require an explanation - it feels as if I am drinking a whisky where there's grains of ground up cinnamon sticks! Very cool, but also a little bit weird. Pepper, chilli, maple syrup and rich caramel sauce.
Finish: Medium to long finish. The taste sort of gets more and more concentrated, and the sweetness becomes a bit lighter. The cinnamon is there al the way. Ginger bread, Christmas day, presents, warm fireplace. Let's all run out and play in the snow! Wheee! ...eh...hmm...well, I actually hate winter, but this dram makes me forget all about that.
Comment: I am still picking bits of cinnamon sticks between my teeth! I love it!
