So, after seven years we have reached the end of the celestial journey that is the Seven Stars series from Swedish distiller Spirit of Hven. The Spirit of Hven Seven Stars No. 7 Alkaid was launched on March 8, 2019.

"Alkaid is number 7 and the last in the Spirit of Hven “Seven Stars” series. It binds up the quintessence from the former editions by embracing parts of what’s been unique in every star.

There are notes of American and European oak, aromas of elegant wines as Margaux and Sherry as well as a soft hint of smoke. "

Nose: Oh, my. This is both delicate and refined. It comes across as much older than what I know it to be. Japanese level complexity going on here. At the forefront I find mild toasted oak, sun-warmed leather, dry tobacco and cocoa. Behind this front layer I pick up on orchard fruits, vanilla, milk chocolate, and a whiff of dried herbs.

Taste: Full bodied and very rich. Almost chewy in texture, firm and solid in character. Warm and delightful. Dry cocoa, very dark chocolate minus the bitterness - because there is nothing bitter here. Softly floral and green.

Finish: Medium to long finish. Continues as it started, but as it fades away there's apples with a rich sauce of caramel, hints of dry cinnamon, ginger and honey. A whiff of smoke adds the finishing touch.

Comment: A truly fine whisky. What a perfect way to finish the Seven Stars series. Kudos!
