For the second year now independent bottler Berry Bros & Rudd have released their Nordic Casks series. We start off with this entry from Stauning Distillery, Denmark. This is a rye whisky initially matured in virgin oak, then finished for 1 year in a single ex-Moscatel cask (cask #6493). Limited to 254 bottles.

Nose: Rich and warm. Pepper, rye bread and vanilla. Toasted oak. Green notes with time.

Taste: Full bodied and feisty. Lots of rich pepper notes. Then cinnamon and nutmeg. More pepper. Ginger. More pepper. Then hints of sweet licorice. Rather dry in style.

Finish: Medium long finish. More pepper. Sweet and juicy orchard fruits. Rye bread and pepper all the way. Some oakiness and chewing gum in the end.

Comment: A great rye.
