Stauning Smoke

Stauning Smoke, 5 YO, 47 %

The Stauning Smoke is a core range product from the Danish distillery Stauning. This is a single malt, and as such quite different from their rye whiskies. The Stauning smoke is made using locally produced barley, and smoked using locally sourced peat and heather. This single malt whisky has been matured for 5-6 years in a combination of 1st fill ex-bourbon casks, 1st fill ex-Madeira casks, 1st fill Jamaica rum casks and virgin American oak casks.

On the official product page we find the following: “Stauning Smoke is the quintessence of the distillery's innovative New Nordic-whisky philosophy: A mildly smoked single malt whisky made from pure local ingredients, malted on open floors, smoked over locally harvested peat and heather found in the landscape surrounding Stauning, double-distilled in small flame-heated pot stills and finally aged on 1st Fill wine and spirits casks.“

Nose: A delightful, mellow harmony of chocolate-infused peat meets the sensory smoke of cacao wood. Drifting alongside, citrus merges with soft, billowing tropical fruits. The distant aroma recalls heather moors ablaze.

Palate: Offering a medium-bodied experience, it presents a dry, peppery dance with the robustness of peat. This is met with a surprising fizziness and a grainy touch. The creaminess of vanilla emerges, casting a protective shadow over peat and fruit. Subtler undertones of honey and leather lurk beneath.

Finish: Medium length. Growing drier and spicier as it lingers, it leaves an intriguing taste of dirt-kissed sugar cubes.

Comment: The expected meets the pleasantly unexpected.
