Vardberg Born
Vardberg Born, 3 YO, 48 %
I appear to have forgotten to publish my review of the very first release from Berentsen’s Brygghus. Well, I did publish my review of the cask strength version of this whisky, but here is the 48% ABV version reviewed, finally.
Nose: Grandma’s home made caramel pudding. Almond milk and assorted dried fruits. Malty, with a whiff of rubber tires that soon dissipates. With time white pepper and a mildly bitter-ish oaky note. With further time I pick up notes reminiscent of a Norwegian forest in early Autumn after a heavy rainfall. And then tomato vine - clear as day.
Taste: Medium body. Comes across as a little raw and youthful at first. Dry-ish in character and somewhat spicy - pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg mainly. Some fruitiness in the background - alternating waves of tropical fruits and dried fruits.
Finish: Medium long finish. Nice and warm. The spices and fruity sweetness have now come together in and make a cohesive whole. Some oaky bitterness and peppermint in the end.
Comment: Youthful and mature at the same time. Promising for sure.
