Agitator Single Malt

Agitator Single Malt, 3 YO, 43 %

Here it is the, finally. The first single malt released by Swedish Distillery Agitator. I have been looking forward to tasting this for some time. I find it fascinating how innovative and different they are at Agitator, with Distillery Manager Oscar Bruno leading the charge. They do vacuum distillation. They use chestnut casks (in addition to oak). A full week of fermentation. Casking strength of 55 % ABV rather than the de facto standard (at least in Scotland) of 63.5 % ABV.

This first product, simply called Agitator Single Malt, is a mix of unpeated and peated spirit. It has been matured in four different types of casks; ex-bourbon, virgin American oak, ex-sherry and chestnut casks.

The Agitator Single Malt was released in Sweden on November 10, and it sells at SEK 479 (54089).

Nose: Fruity with citrus and apples on initial approach. Salty caramel and hints of toasted oak. With time apple crisps, and white pepper chocolate. With further time a delicate spiciness evolves; exotic, warm and enticing.

Taste: Smooth and of medium body. The peppery notes take to the stage faster on the palate. Apple flavoured, floral honey. Warm and exotic spices. Hints of dried fruits.

Finish: Medium long finish. Juicy and dry at the same time. Fizzy and fun. Caramel and dried fruits. Hints of soot. A different kind of “woodiness”, it seems multifaceted compared to oakiness. In the end tempered tannins and a mild bitterness.

Comment: This is a fine and delicate creation. Make this your first dram of the evening, take your time and enjoy. Japan meet Sweden, Sweden meet Japan!
